Essence of this Article

From public health scares about the risk of deep vein thrombosis (DVT) on long-distance flights to high rates of pulmonary embolism (PE) in patients recovering from major surgery, venous thromboembolism (VTE) is a well-publicized and serious health issue. VTE results when a thrombus forms in a vessel and obstructs blood flow. The pathogenic factors believed to be responsible for VTE are generally considered to involve vascular wall injury, hypercoagulable state and impaired circulation, collectively known as Virchow’s triad. Many individual risk factors can contribute to an overall increased risk of VTE.

Virchow's Triad. The pathologist Rudolph Virchow was the first to describe the three main factors that predispose an individual to thrombosis.

VTE may refer to DVT, PE or both. From public health scares about the risk of DVT on long-distance flights to high rates of PE in patients recovering from major surgery, VTE is a well-publicized, serious health issue.118, 119

The incidence of VTE has been shown to increase with age, where patients >40 years of age are at significantly increased risk, compared with younger patients.120

VTE results when a thrombus forms in a vessel and obstructs blood flow. The pathogenic factors believed to be responsible for VTE are generally considered to involve vascular wall injury, hypercoagulable state and impaired circulation, collectively known as Virchow’s triad, although the absence of one or more of these does not preclude the occurrence of VTE.121-123 Many individual risk factors can contribute to an overall increased risk of VTE.121
