Deep vein thrombosis (DVT), is the term that is used to describe a blood clot that develops within a deep vein in the body, most commonly in the large veins that run thru the muscles of the calf and thigh. This can lead to pain and swelling in the leg. If left untreated, DVT may lead to serious complications such a pulmonary embolism, which is when the blood clot travels to the lungs resulting in reduced blood flow.
