Essence of this Article

Heart failure is a recognized independent risk factor for stroke, thought to be mainly caused by stasis in the left ventricle, which leads to an increased risk of thrombus formation and subsequent cerebral embolism. Atrial fibrillation (AF), which is common in patients with heart failure, further increases the risk of thromboembolism and stroke.

The risk of stroke is increased in patients with heart failure

Heart failure is also a recognized independent risk factor for stroke.324 This is thought to be mainly caused by stasis in the left ventricle, which leads to an increased risk of thrombus formation and subsequent cerebral embolism.318 Several studies have found a relationship between reduced left ventricular systolic function and an increased risk of stroke.324 AF, which is common in patients with heart failure, further increases the risk of thromboembolism and stroke.318
