Blood Clot

A thrombus is a blood clot formed when there is an imbalance in the blood coagulation system. A thrombus can block the flow of blood through a vein or artery, and can detach from the vessel wall to become a life-threatening embolus when it lodges in the lungs or other vital organs.19, 372 Blood clots in coronary arteries cause acute coronary syndrome, and blood clots that form in the heart are the major cause of stroke in people with atrial fibrillation.43, 16

Blood Clot in Leg Symptom

The pathological formation of a blood clot, or thrombosis, poses significant health risks, including venous thromboembolic disease (VTE).16, 144, 10

The most common type of VTE is deep vein thrombosis (DVT), occurring in veins deep within the muscles of the leg and pelvis.156

Physical signs and symptoms of DVT have a low predictive value in diagnosis. For that reason, objective imaging tests are required for diagnosis.150

Blood Clot Symptom

The pathological formation of a blood clot, or thrombosis, poses significant health risks, including venous thromboembolic disease (VTE).16, 144, 10

Waiting for the signs and symptoms of VTE to appear before instituting anticoagulant treatment increases the risk of serious thromboembolic events.35 These events may be acutely life-threatening, such as pulmonary embolism (PE), or may lead to long-term sequelae, including post-thrombotic syndrome and pulmonary hypertension.
